About

Su Baker, based in Melbourne, Australia, has a practice spanning over four decades and a deep engagement with painting as a contemporary act. Her latest works deepen her investigation into the tension between the autonomous act of painting and the structures — both physical and cultural — that contain and define it. This tension is further emphasized by the visual and conceptual contrast between the grid-like structures with defined geometries, imposed order, and functional logic — and the organic, unpredictable flow of natural growth patterns. Where one often prioritizes clarity, permanence, and control, Baker’s new work evokes a world in constant negotiation with entropy, weather, and time. Her work resists the fixity of the grid even as it acknowledges its influence, allowing moments of disruption, softness, and emergence to seep through the framework.

“I’m interested in what happens when the material asserts itself — when paint, canvas, and structure negotiate their own relationship,” says Baker. “There’s something both vulnerable and insistent in what emerges.”
